Watch Kill the Messenger Movie Download, A quintessential David and Goliath tale, Kill the Messenger is as suspenseful as any episode of Showtime's Homeland, which director Michael Cuesta also executive-produced.

What makes it most compelling is that it's actually a true story, told directly and sparely, and anchored by a superb performance by Jeremy Renner as investigative journalist Gary Webb (*** out four; rated R; opening Friday in select cities).

Journalists are often quick to point out that movies about the press don't often get it right — especially when it comes to practical details. Messenger mostly gets it right. It helps that screenwriter Peter Landesman is a former journalist and that the film is based on Webb's book Dark Alliance and Kill the Messenger by Nick Schou.
Webb was working for the San Jose Mercury News in 1996 when he reported a controversial story that reverberated across the country. Tipped off by a source, Webb linked the '80s-era CIA to a cocaine-smuggling operation out of Nicaragua.

According to Webb, the crack cocaine epidemic in U.S. inner cities was traceable to Nicaraguan drug dealers who funneled drug proceeds to the CIA-backed Contra rebels. Further, Webb reported, the CIA was aware of the large shipments of drugs into the U.S. and that the Reagan government was complicit, in order to raise money for the Contras.

Community leaders read Webb's story and expressed outrage. Webb was initially celebrated by the national news media for his in-depth expose.

But, soon, as one of his CIA informants put it, he was "controversialized." After playing up Webb's scoop in a celebrated three-day series, Webb's editors (Oliver Platt and Mary Elizabeth Winstead) questioned his credibility. They demanded on-the-record sources, and Webb offered none, since his information came from drug dealers and former CIA operatives who don't exactly yearn to see their names in print. Soon the paper backed away from the story, citing problems with Webb's reporting, implying he overstated things. However, the film never says precisely what.
